Mantra 1 of 16 The Rosa Banks Mantras

Protect the relationship

Your relationship with your child is the foundation on which everything else is built.

Why it matters

When life becomes difficult, it is tempting to focus all of our energy on changing behaviour. We remind, correct, negotiate, threaten consequences and repeat ourselves until we are exhausted. Unfortunately, this often weakens the very relationship that gives us the greatest influence.

For neurodivergent teenagers, feeling understood and emotionally safe is not a reward for good behaviour. It is often the condition that makes growth possible.

A strong relationship does not mean saying yes to everything or avoiding boundaries. It means your child knows that even during difficult moments, you are on their side. When they believe that, they are far more likely to listen to you, seek your support and eventually accept your guidance.

The takeaway

Protect the relationship first. Everything else becomes easier from there.
