Understand
Behaviour is meaningful. Rather than seeing challenging behaviour as the problem, become curious about what it may be telling you. Anxiety, sensory differences, executive functioning difficulties, emotional wellbeing, communication differences, demand sensitivity and developmental skills that are still emerging can all affect a child's ability to cope.
Look beyond the behaviour itself and try to understand what may be getting in the way. You do not always need to know the exact reason before responding differently, but the more you understand your child's experience, the more likely you are to find an approach that genuinely helps.
Your child refuses to go to school every morning. Instead of assuming they are lazy or oppositional, you begin exploring what school actually feels like for them. Over time you discover that crowded corridors, noisy classrooms and the uncertainty of break times are leaving them completely overwhelmed.
